Squamscot Root Beer

Squamscot root beer

Bottle and Label: Clear bottle with a simple label that attests to the “old fashioned” origins of this root beer. It also has a nicely designed red, white, and blue cap

Ingredients: Pure Carbonated Water, Cane Sugar, Citric Acid, Clove Oil, Caramel Color, and Sodium Benzoate

Smell: Strong traditional root beer smell from the bottle with classic hints of licorice and wintergreen. That strong smell does not change after being poured and remains a treat for the nose

Carbonation: This brew is fairly lightly carbonated. You don’t notice the carbonation until it hits the back of your mouth. It is very smooth up front with just enough carbonation at the end to avoid feeling flat

Color: A very nice dark brown color. It’s a very pleasing brown that avoids looking black like coffee or watered down and cream soda-esque like some brews

Head: Extremely short, but very fizzy. This head, despite being very short, continued to fizz a good while after being poured in my frosted mug

Flavor:  Wow! What a nice surprise after the disaster that was the last brew I reviewed. That strong smell carries over into the flavor of this brew. It pulls no punches in the flavor department and does not try to do anything fancy. It has a very traditional root beer flavor that is just a bit sweeter than most. It also has an enjoyably sweet aftertaste the lingers for just a bit. Overall, this brew does a fine job in the flavor department. It has a traditional taste with just a little bit more sweetness than most to help set it apart from average brews.

Conclusion: Squamscot Root Beer is a very solid brew. The only real ding I can give it is in the very small head that it has. That said, the flavor is very good with just enough extra sweetness to set it apart from the pack. It also has an enjoyable color and smell. In short, drinking this root beer is a very pleasing experience all around. I think just about anyone would enjoy this brew and it would make a great choice for a 4th of July family get together or with a float. It would also be a good root beer to just chug on a hot day if you need something cool and refreshing to drink. If you happen to find this root beer on a store shelf, be sure to pick it up and give it a try
