Triple XXX Root Beer

Bottle and Label: Brown bottle with brown and red label that states, “Tastes like root beer used to taste”

Ingredients: Carbonated Water, High Fructose Corn Syrup, Caramel Color, Sodium Benzoate, Citric Acid, Natural and artificial flavors

Smell: Very nice smell from the bottle. Smooth vanilla with hints of wintergreen and licorice.

Carbonation: Low level of carbonation makes this brew feel flat in the mouth from start to finish

Color: Dark, chocolate brown color

Head: Incredible head! I had to stop pouring in my oversize A&W frosted mug. The head is very foamy, long lasting, and extremely tall.

Flavor: The flavor is unremarkable. It is hard to pinpoint a dominant flavor because the brew tastes watered down. There is some licorice in the flavor and maybe a bit of wintergreen, but I’m not even sure about that because of how weak it is. It also leaves a slightly metallic/bitter aftertaste on the tip of the tongue after it is swallowed.

Conclusion: Triple XXX Root Beer is disappointing. It has a great smell and a great head. It should be a great brew. Unfortunately, a lack of carbonation makes this brew feel and taste flat and the flavor is actually quite bland. This surprising from a brew with such a provocative name. I expected it to take a few more risks or to at least be well above average after the smell and head were so good. Triple XXX does merit a look if you enjoy a brews with lots of foam or if smell is a primary factor for you in the enjoyment of a root beer. As it is, this brew is only barely above average.
